Prefectural chorus competition
Aug. 23rd, 2004 07:44 pmSo, the Aichi Prefectural chorus competition was on Sunday, and my women's chorus, Voce Amiche, entered. We sang a couple of Japanese pieces, and got the top rating of gold, but the judges picked a men's group to go on to the regional competition instead. Oh well. It was at the same place as the Choral festival back in June, where I first saw Voce Amiche. Yet again, I was the only white person in the entire place.
I was actually kind of relieved. My mixed chorus, Nagoya Konsei, has a performance on September 5th that I need to focus on, and the regionals would have been on Sept. 25. Also, this means we get to move on to our next project, Bernstein's Chichester Psalms, which I'm really excited to sing. I'm also happy to be done with this Japanese song that I didn't really like.
The fun part was going out afterwards. A number of people were in shock, and one woman cried, but I was just like yeay, Bernstein! I was disappointed, but as I said above, content not to go on. We went to a small Chinese place, and decided to go with the all you can drink menu. I proceeded to get a little buzzed (yeay Plum wine). One of the dishes that come out was namako, which I didn't figure out until a day later was Sea Cucumber. I didn't think much of it, too soft.
I love to sing. One of the neat things is that when I'm intoxicated, I can sing high notes much easier than I can sober. I went over and sat with one of the women who I've become friends with (and is really cute!), and we started finding songs that we both knew. Eventually, we had the entire group singing with us. It was so fun! I'm glad that we were the only people in the restaurant though.
I got a really great compliment from our conductor. He said that the atmosphere of the group has changed since I joined, and that he was glad it had. He was sitting with the pianist, and I looked at her and said "really", and she nodded at me. It's hard to believe that I impact people like that.
It was a really fun evening. and now we get to sing Bernstein!
